چکیده

We define 3 samples of extragalactic radio sources of type FRII, containing 26 objects in total. The control sample consists of 6C and 7C sources with radio powers of around 10 27 W Hz −1 at 151 MHz and redshifts of z ∼ 1. The other samples contain 3CRR sources with either comparable redshifts but radio powers about a decade larger or with comparable radio powers but redshifts around z ∼ 0.4. We use these samples to investigate the possible evolution of their depolarisation and rotation measure properties with redshift and radio power independently. We used VLA data for all sources at ∼ 4800 MHz and two frequencies within the 1400 MHz band, either from our own observations or from the archive. We present maps of the total intensity flux, polarised flux, depolarisation, spectral index, rotation measure and magnetic field direction where not previously published. Radio cores were detected in twelve of the twenty-six radio sources. Fourteen of the sources show a strong Laing-Garrington effect but almost all of the sources show some depolarisation asymmetry. All sources show evidence for an external Faraday screen being responsible for the observed depolarisation. We find that sources at higher redshift are more strongly depolarised. Rotation measure shows no trend with either redshift or radio power, however variations in the rotation measure across individual sources increase with the redshift of the sources but do not depend on their radio power.

The depolarisation properties of powerful extragalactic radio sources as a function of cosmic epoch

We use the observed polarisation properties of a sample of 26 powerful radio galaxies and radio-loud quasars to constrain the conditions in the Faraday screens local to the sources. We adopt the cosmological redshift, low-frequency radio luminosity and physical size of the large-scale radio structures as our ‘fundamental’ parameters. We find no correlation of the radio spectral index with any o...

The Cosmological Evolution of the Environments of Powerful Radio Galaxies

We present the results from the analysis of 26 extragalactic radio sources of type FRII which were observed with the VLA at 5 GHz and around the 1.4 GHz band. The sources were selected to have redshifts in the range 0.3 < z < 1.3, radio powers between 6.9×10WHz < P151MHz < 1.3×10 WHz and angular size θ ≥ 10. We found that the depolarisation and the rms variations in the rotation measure increas...

The Nature and Evolution of Classical Double Radio Sources from Complete Samples

We present a study of the trends in luminosity, linear size, spectral index, and redshift of classical double radio sources from three complete samples selected at successively fainter low radio-frequency flux-limits. We have been able to decouple the effects of the tight correlation between redshift and luminosity (inherent in any single flux-limited sample) which have hitherto hindered interp...

The nature of the optical—radio correlations for pow- erful radio galaxies

The nature of the optical–radio correlations for powerful radio galaxies is investigated using spectroscopic observations of a complete sample of southern 2Jy radio sources. In line with previous work, we find that significant correlations exist between the luminosities of the [OIII]λ5007, [OII]λ3727 and Hβ emission lines and the radio luminosity. However, our observations are not easily reconc...

The new sample of giant radio sources III . Statistical trends and correlations

Aims. In this paper we analyse whether 'giant' radio galaxies (GRGs) differ from 'normal'-size galaxies (NSGs) except for the linear extent of their radio structure. Methods. We compare a number of properties of GRGs with the corresponding properties of NSGs, and analyse the statistical trends and correlations of physical parameters, homogeneously determined for the sources, with their 'fundame...
